Kindle no longer available on Amazon India website, company says it is temporary

If you are a book lover in India who swears by the Kindle, you might have noticed something strange lately. The trusty e-reader is nowhere to be found on Amazon India’s website. A quick search turns up accessories, but the devices themselves are missing. What’s going on?
Interestingly, you can still spot Kindles in some offline stores like Reliance Digital. However, industry insiders suggest these might just be leftover stock. There’s been no sign of fresh inventory, which is raising questions about the future of Kindle in India.
Is Amazon discontinuing Kindle in India?
Globally, Amazon has been busy revamping its Kindle lineup. Earlier this year, it launched four brand-new models featuring vibrant colour displays— a first for the series. Typically, Amazon doesn’t delay much in bringing its latest devices to India, but this time, things seem different. Adding to the mystery, Amazon has removed previous-generation Kindle devices from its Indian website, something it hasn’t done in the past. Previously, older models were often available even after the launch of newer versions. This unusual move has led to speculation about whether Amazon is rethinking its Kindle strategy for India.
The last Kindle launched in India was in 2022
The last Kindle officially introduced in the Indian market was back in 2022— an upgraded version of the entry-level model launched in 2019, priced at Rs 9,999. Since then, there’s been complete silence on new launches. While other markets enjoy the latest features, Indian Kindle fans are left wondering if the beloved e-reader has been sidelined here.
When India Today Tech reached out to Amazon to understand the fate of Kindle, the company was coy. Although it refused to elaborate, Amazon India suggested that the Kindle situation in India is temporary. “We regret that Kindle e-readers are temporarily unavailable. Please keep an eye on our Amazon.in page for any updates regarding Kindle availability. Thank you for your understanding,” an Amazon India spokesperson said.
This clarification suggests that the absence of Kindles on the Indian site might not be permanent, but it doesn’t provide a timeline for their return.
For now, if you’re in the market for a Kindle, your best bet might be scouring offline retailers or considering global shipping options — though both come with challenges. Or probably you can look at importing other e-readers like Kobo and Onyx if you can find them at a good price and free-shipping.
