Two-time U.S. Open champion, former SMU star and Grapevine resident Bryson DeChambeau shares his thoughts with The Dallas Morning News about this week’s LIV Golf Team Championship at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton.
CARROLLTON – Finally, Saturday is when Crushers GC begins defense of our LIV Golf team title.
Well, technically it started in February at the Mayakoba tournament in Mexico, but Saturday is when Crushers will compete in the LIV Golf Team Championships semifinals against the Iron Heads after earning a bye in the quarterfinals as one of the top three teams in the season-points race.
What is great for me is it’s a home tournament, making it easy to follow my usual routine. The difference is I’ll have breakfast at home, the same one that I have made for me every week: Pancakes with some pecans on them. And I’ll probably have some sausage.

Then I’ll drive to Maridoe and start getting warmed up with my trainers. Both of them are in town, because it’s the LIV Team Championship and they wanted to be here.
One of them, Ryan Overturf, is based in Dallas. The other is Greg Roskopf, who is the founder of Muscle Activation Techniques in Denver. Greg and Ryan have been trainers for more than two decades and have worked with many of the world’s top athletes.
After warming up my body, about 90 minutes before our shotgun tee time, I’ll meet with my caddie, G-Bo (Greg Bodine). We’ll spend about 15 minutes going over pin locations and wind direction. This is match play, so there will be a lot of strategy. We’ll focus on what I need to work on to be aggressive on some of the holes, depending on the wind, and which holes I need to be protective on.
Then about an hour and 15 minutes before tee time, I’ll start warming up with 30 minutes of putting, 15 minutes of chipping, then another 25 minutes for hitting balls.
Then we’ll start match play and, hopefully, once we win we’ll go and have a nice dinner together as a team and get prepared for Sunday’s championship matches — which is four people playing, all four scores counting. On a tough golf course like this, we’ve got to make sure our golf teams are all in touch and ready to go.
Mentally, there’s a lot going on at LIV events. There’s music. There’s interaction with fans, but I had a lot of interaction with fans during the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, so I wouldn’t say it’s dissimilar.
We’re playing for $14 million for first place out of a $50 million purse. It’s quite exciting to have this opportunity to grow our team valuation.
The Crushers have been No. 1 in the league for the past couple years. We won the team championship last year. And we want to continue to keep creating value for Crushers, which helps us create value for some cool projects, whether it’s building driving ranges or helping children around the globe.
There’s a lot we can do, for not only Dallas but places around the world, including India, where my Crushers teammate Anirban Lahiri is from. There’s a lot of opportunity for the Crushers, so we’re super focused on repeating as champions because it cements us as a force to be reckoned with.
